Mistral SEO, or Le Chat SEO, is the work of making your pages easy for Mistral’s assistant to find and cite when it searches the web. Le Chat, renamed Vibe in 2026, runs a web search when a question needs current information, and every web-sourced answer comes with inline links and a Sources panel. Mistral documents a search index fed by its own crawler, MistralAI-Index, and a second agent, MistralAI-User, that visits pages when a user asks. To get cited, let both reach your public pages, then publish clear, current answers to your buyers’ questions in the languages they ask in.
When a buyer in Lyon asks Mistral’s assistant “quel logiciel de comptabilité pour une PME ?”, you want your product in the answer and your site in the sources. This guide sticks to what Mistral documents, says plainly what it leaves open, and shows how to measure your visibility, by hand and with Citegram.
Key takeaways
- Le Chat is now called Vibe. Mistral announced the rename in May 2026, and the assistant still lives at chat.mistral.ai. Most of what follows applies whichever name your buyers use.
- With web search on, the assistant decides when a question needs current information, searches, and shows a globe icon, inline links and a Sources button listing every reference.
- For news questions, Mistral says the assistant draws on AFP and AP, two news agencies, and marks those results with a news icon.
- Mistral publishes three crawler names: MistralAI-User (fetches pages for user requests), MistralAI-Index (builds the index behind Mistral search) and MistralAI-Training (collects training data). Only the first two feed answers.
- Mistral doesn’t say which search engine or ranking signals sit behind its web search, so the reliable method is to measure which sources it cites for your prompts.
Le Chat, Vibe, Work: what is Mistral’s assistant called now?
The naming changed this year, so it’s worth settling first. Mistral’s post Vibe gets to work, dated May 28, 2026, says “Le Chat is now Vibe”, with conversations, settings and plans carried over. Mistral’s help center article Le Chat is now Vibe describes three modes: Vibe Work, “the productivity mode you used in le Chat”, Vibe Code for developers, and Vibe Chat, the turn-based conversation mode. The launch post adds that Mistral will “soon sunset Chat mode”.
For visibility work, the name matters less than the plumbing. Mistral’s documentation for web search is written for Work, and its crawler page refers to Vibe. Many people still call it Le Chat. We use “the assistant” or “Vibe” below for the same product.
How does Le Chat (Vibe) search the web and cite sources?
Mistral’s documentation page Search the web is the clearest official description. It covers two tools.
Web search
Web search is switched on from the chat’s Tools menu. Once it’s on, the assistant searches when a question needs current information and folds the findings into its answer. Mistral says “every web-sourced response comes with its references”: a globe icon next to the answer, inline links to the original sources, and a Sources button that opens a panel listing all of them.
That last point matters for measurement. The sources are visible and ordered in the interface, so you can check exactly which pages the assistant used for a given prompt.
News from AFP and AP
The same page says that for news queries, the assistant draws on “professional news partners Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Associated Press (AP)”, flagged with a news icon. The AFP part goes back to January 2025, when Mistral announced the AFP partnership and said Le Chat would get access to AFP’s newswire stories in six languages, including French, English, German and Spanish. TechCrunch reported that the deal covers AFP’s text archive back to 1983, not photos or video.
For most B2B brands, this means news-style prompts (“what’s new in e-invoicing rules in France?”) may be answered from agency wires rather than from vendor blogs. Category and comparison prompts go through web search like any other question.
Open URL
When a user pastes a link, the assistant fetches and reads that single page, including online PDFs. Mistral says it doesn’t crawl the site or follow links, can’t access pages behind a login or paywall, and may load highly interactive sites incompletely. A buyer pasting your pricing page into the chat only gets what that page shows without a login.
What the developer API adds
Mistral’s API offers agents a web search tool in a basic version and a premium one that adds news articles, with answers returned alongside references carrying each source’s title and URL. It’s documented separately from the app, so read it as a close relative, not proof of how the app picks sources.
Which Mistral crawlers should you allow in robots.txt?
Unlike xAI or Microsoft, Mistral publishes a page that names its crawlers. It lists three, each with a full user-agent string, a split close to the three bots Anthropic documents in our Claude SEO guide.
| User agent | What Mistral says it does | Used for answers? | Published IPs |
|---|---|---|---|
| MistralAI-User | Visits a page when users ask Vibe a question, and may link to it as a source. Not used for automatic crawling or training | Yes | Yes |
| MistralAI-Index | Automated crawling “for indexing purposes only”, for Mistral search, which helps answer questions in Vibe. Not used for training | Yes | Yes |
| MistralAI-Training | Builds datasets to train Mistral models. Not used for search indexing or live answers | No | No |
What this means in practice:
- Allow MistralAI-Index and MistralAI-User on public pages. They are the two agents tied to answers. If robots.txt, your CDN or a bot-management rule blocks them, your pages can drop out of the material the assistant draws on.
- Decide on MistralAI-Training separately. Mistral states that webmasters “can disallow this user agent” in robots.txt, and that it isn’t used for search or live answers. Blocking training and allowing the other two is a consistent setup.
- Check your firewall, not only robots.txt. Many CDNs block unknown bots by default. Mistral links JSON lists of IP addresses for MistralAI-User and MistralAI-Index, which you can use to allowlist them or to verify that a request claiming those names is genuine.
- Read your logs. Search your server or CDN logs for the three tokens. Index visits show whether Mistral is crawling you at all.
Note what the page doesn’t say: it states the robots.txt opt-out explicitly only for MistralAI-Training. For the other two it says Mistral uses robots.txt tags to help webmasters manage access, without spelling out the rules. Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt covers how to audit these rules across assistants.
What Mistral documents and what it doesn’t
| What Mistral documents | What it doesn’t document |
|---|---|
| The assistant searches the web when a question needs current information | Which search engine or index provides web results beyond “Mistral search” |
| Web-sourced answers show inline links and a Sources panel | How sources are selected or ordered |
| News queries draw on AFP and AP | How news and web results are weighed against each other |
| Three named crawlers with user-agent strings, two with IP lists | Explicit robots.txt rules for MistralAI-User and MistralAI-Index |
| Open URL reads one page, not behind a login | Any ranking factors, or a report of your citations |
The pipeline is documented: crawl, index, search, answer with sources. The selection inside it is not. Mistral offers site owners no equivalent of the AI Performance report Microsoft provides for Copilot in Bing Webmaster Tools, described in our Copilot SEO guide.
Why Mistral matters for French and European audiences
Mistral describes itself on its about page as “a European leader”, and TechCrunch calls it “the Paris-based artificial intelligence company”. That makes it a natural option for buyers who prefer a European provider. If you sell in France, Belgium, Switzerland or Quebec, three things follow:
- Track prompts in French, not only in English. A buyer who asks “meilleur CRM pour une agence de 15 personnes” may see different sources from one asking the same thing in English. Treat each language as its own set of prompts.
- Publish real French pages. A translated product page with French pricing in euros, French customer types and French regulations (e-invoicing, GDPR, hosting location) answers the questions French buyers ask. Keep the key facts in the page’s HTML text, since search tools read text, not images.
- Earn French-language third-party coverage. For “best X” questions, assistants often cite comparison articles, review sites and trade press. French trade media, French comparison sites and French review pages are the sources that can show up for French prompts. Our guide on how AI assistants choose sources explains why third-party pages carry weight.
Mistral SEO checklist: what to fix
None of this guarantees a citation. It removes the obstacles Mistral’s documentation makes visible.
- Open the door to the right crawlers. MistralAI-Index and MistralAI-User allowed in robots.txt and in your CDN, on every public page you want cited.
- Make pages readable without a browser. Pricing, features, integrations and comparisons in plain HTML text. Content that only appears after a script runs, or that sits in images and gated PDFs, is harder to use.
- Write passages that stand alone. “Plans start at 15 € per user per month, billed annually” is easier to cite than a paragraph of positioning. See how to write content AI cites.
- Show freshness. The assistant searches for current information. Put a visible update date on pricing, comparison and “best tools” pages, and keep them accurate.
- Be consistent everywhere. The same product name, category and pricing on your site, your directory listings and your French and English pages, so the assistant doesn’t mix versions. Our guide to entity SEO for AI covers this in detail.
How to measure your Mistral visibility by hand
Mistral gives site owners no citation report, so you build your own baseline.
- Pick 10 to 30 buyer prompts without your brand name: category, use case and comparison questions. Our guide to choosing prompts to track explains how. Add French versions if you sell in France.
- Turn web search on in the Tools menu, then ask each prompt several times. Answers vary between runs.
- Open the Sources panel after each answer. Note which domains are cited, in what order, and whether they’re your pages, review sites, media or competitors.
- Record mentions, position and competitors in a spreadsheet: was your brand named, in which position, and next to whom.
- Check your referral traffic. Visits from links in the assistant arrive from chat.mistral.ai. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows how to group them.
- Change one thing, then rerun the same prompts a few weeks later and compare.
Track Mistral with Citegram
Citegram is a free Chrome extension with a dashboard that does this routine for you:
- Add your buyer prompts in the dashboard, in English, French or both.
- Run them in Mistral and the other assistants. Citegram asks each prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, Mistral, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, in background tabs, with the accounts already signed in to your browser. No API key, and questions count toward your own plan usage.
- See whether Mistral named you and where. Each run records whether your brand was mentioned, its position and the competitors named.
- See the sources in rank order. Citegram records the sources each answer cited, so you see whether Mistral relies on your site, a review site or the press.
- Compare across assistants. Share of voice per brand and per assistant, the most cited domains and trends over repeated runs show whether Mistral treats you differently from ChatGPT or Gemini.

FAQ
Is Le Chat the same as Mistral Vibe?
Yes. Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026. Accounts, plans and conversations carried over, and the assistant is still at chat.mistral.ai. Vibe Work is the productivity mode that replaced the Le Chat experience, and Mistral has said the separate Chat mode will be sunset.
Does Le Chat search the web and cite its sources?
Yes, when web search is enabled in the Tools menu. Mistral documents that the assistant searches when a question needs current information, and that web-sourced answers show inline links and a Sources panel listing every reference. For news questions it also draws on AFP and AP.
Should I block MistralAI-User or MistralAI-Index?
Not if you want to appear in Mistral’s answers. MistralAI-Index feeds Mistral search, which helps answer questions in Vibe, and MistralAI-User fetches pages when users ask. If you don’t want your content used for training, Mistral says you can disallow MistralAI-Training in robots.txt; it isn’t used for search or live answers.
How do I get cited by Le Chat?
Let MistralAI-Index and MistralAI-User reach your public pages. Publish clear, current answers to buyer questions in plain HTML, in French as well as English if you sell in France, and earn coverage on the third-party sites your category relies on. Then measure which sources the assistant cites, since Mistral doesn’t publish its selection method.
How can I check if Le Chat mentions my brand?
Ask your buyer prompts with web search on, several times each, and open the Sources panel after every answer. Note whether your brand is named, in which position, next to which competitors, and which domains are cited. Mistral provides no citation report for site owners, so you either keep this log by hand or use a tracker such as Citegram.
