Google AI Overviews Traffic: How to Measure and Adapt

Is Google AI Overviews traffic loss hitting your site? Learn which queries are most affected, how to measure the impact, and how to get cited instead.

Google AI Overviews tend to reduce clicks on simple informational queries, because the summary answers the question before anyone scrolls. Commercial and complex queries still send Google AI Overviews traffic, often to the pages cited inside the Overview. To gauge the impact, compare CTR by query type in Search Console and track which sources each Overview cites.

That shift breaks an old assumption: that ranking well means getting the click. Many SEO teams now see traffic patterns their rank tracking cannot explain.

This guide covers what AI Overviews change, how to measure the impact on your own site, and what to do about it.

Google AI Overviews traffic: what changes

The click moves, or disappears

On a traditional results page, the top organic results capture much of the attention. With an AI Overview at the top, the user reads a summary first. If the summary is enough, there is no click at all. If it is not, the user may click one of the sources linked in the Overview rather than the top organic result.

Ranking and visibility separate

A page can rank well organically and still not be cited in the Overview, and a page further down the results can be cited prominently. Google has said AI Overviews draw on its search index and ranking systems, and has described using a “query fan-out” technique that runs related searches across subtopics. The cited links are therefore not simply the top organic results. You have to check rather than assume. Our guide to query fan-out explains the idea in more detail.

Query types are affected differently

The AI Overviews impact on SEO varies by intent:

  • Definitions and quick facts (“what is a CRM pipeline”) are the most exposed. The Overview often fully answers them.
  • How-to queries are mixed. Short answers get summarized, detailed processes still earn clicks.
  • Comparisons and “best” queries often show Overviews that name brands, which makes being mentioned as important as being clicked.
  • Navigational and transactional queries seem less likely to show an Overview or to lose clicks to one.

For the broader shift this represents, see SEO vs GEO.

How to measure Google AI Overviews traffic impact on your site

Do not rely on sitewide traffic trends alone. Many things move organic traffic, so isolate the effect.

  1. Export Search Console data for the last 12 to 16 months, at query and page level.
  2. Classify queries by intent: informational, how-to, comparison, commercial, navigational. A simple rules-based classification is enough to start.
  3. Compare impressions and clicks by group. A common pattern is impressions holding steady or rising while clicks fall on informational queries. That gap is often where AI Overviews show up.
  4. Check average position alongside CTR. If position is stable but CTR drops, a change to the results page, such as an Overview, is a likely cause.
  5. Check your top queries. Note whether an Overview appears, which sources it cites, and whether you are one of them.
  6. Track Overview citations over time. Overviews vary by query, location and time. Record which domains are cited for your key queries on a regular schedule.
  7. Tie it to conversions. Lost clicks on low-intent definitions may matter far less than lost clicks on comparison pages. Look at leads and revenue, not sessions alone.

Track AI Overviews automatically with Citegram

Steps 5 and 6 are the hardest to keep up by hand, because Overviews come and go. Citegram, a Chrome extension, can take over that part:

  1. Add your key queries as prompts. Use the commercial and comparison questions from your Search Console analysis.
  2. Run them in Google and the assistants. The extension checks each one in Google in a background tab and records whether an AI Overview appeared and which sources it cited. The same prompts also run in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek and Grok through the accounts signed in to your browser.
  3. See whether you are mentioned. For each answer you get the text, whether and where your brand appears, and the cited sources in rank order.
  4. Review the most cited domains. Reports show which domains are cited most across your prompts and share of voice per brand and per assistant.
  5. Re-run and compare. Trends over repeated runs show whether Overview citations are shifting toward or away from you. Put them next to your Search Console CTR data.

The product tour shows what the reports look like.

What to do about it

Make your content easy to cite

  • Answer the core question clearly in the first paragraph under each heading.
  • Use descriptive headings that match how people phrase questions.
  • Include specific, verifiable details: steps, criteria, prices, limitations. Vague content gives a summary nothing to quote.
  • Keep pages current and show the update date.
  • Use structured data where it accurately describes the page, and keep it consistent with visible content.

Rebalance your content portfolio

  • Accept that pure definition pages may bring fewer clicks. Keep them if they support topical authority, but do not expect them to drive traffic on their own.
  • Invest more in content an Overview cannot fully replace: original data you collected yourself, detailed comparisons, templates, tools and expert opinion.
  • Strengthen comparison and “best for” pages, since brand mentions in Overviews on those queries influence shortlists.

Look beyond your own site

Overviews often cite third-party sources such as review sites, forums and independent comparisons. If those sources mention competitors and not you, you lose visibility even when your own pages rank. Our guide on how to get cited by AI covers how to build that presence honestly.

FAQ

Can I see Google AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

Partly. Clicks and impressions from AI features such as AI Overviews are still counted in the regular Web search type of the Performance report. Since 2026, Search Console also has Search generative AI performance reports, rolled out to all sites on August 31, 2026, which show impressions for AI features but not clicks. That is why teams still infer the click impact from CTR changes and track Overview citations separately.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Partly. Google offers controls such as the nosnippet directive that limit how your content is shown in search features, and has documented that these also apply to AI features. Using them can also limit how your pages appear in regular snippets, so weigh the trade-off carefully. For most brands, aiming to be cited makes more sense than opting out.

Does ranking first still matter?

Yes. Strong organic rankings still drive traffic for many queries and appear to correlate with being cited. But ranking alone is no longer the full picture. You need to know whether you appear inside the Overview too.

How do I know if AI Overviews caused my traffic drop?

You usually cannot prove it from one metric. The strongest signal is a drop in CTR at stable average position, concentrated on informational queries where Overviews appear. Rule out other causes too, such as algorithm updates, seasonality or tracking changes.
